Katie’s tragic death and generosity as a gift of life donor touched the entire community. She was a spirited, loyal, opinionated and extremely giving soul that was always on a quest to learn and to experience the many beauties that this life offers. Here was a young woman who could capture you through her writings, express herself on stage as an actress, debate an issue with vim and vigor and, at the same time, create art work that showed a depth of feelings and universality well beyond her years. Katie’s Corner at Jonathan’s Place & The Katherine Bolka Endowed Scholarship for Academic and Visual Arts Excellence at Ursuline Academy were established in her honor.

KATIE’S CORNER AT JONATHAN’S PLACE: Established in 1994, Jonathan’s Place is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides emergency services for abused, abandoned and neglected children, age newborn to 17 years. This is the only licensed emergency shelter in the Dallas area that serves children under the age of ten (10). In addition to providing housing for the children, Jonathan’s Place takes care of all the children’s basic needs, including food, clothing and education, and advanced needs, including medical, dental and psychological. Jonathan's Place is also a Foster Family Program - recruiting, training and certifying foster families in order to place children from Child Protective Services into their care. A group of students from Bishop Lynch High School and Ursuline Academy have joined with Jonathan’s Place to create an art room in honor of Katie’s memory; provide a service to abused and neglected children; and provide community service opportunities to students at Bishop Lynch and Ursuline. The art room is called “Katie’s Corner” because of Katie’s love of art. It gives the children served by Jonathan’s Place a safe place to be creative, and a place to express their feelings and experiences through art, since often they are unable to do so with words. Donations to Jonathan’s Place directed towards Katie’s Corner can be sent to the following address: Jonathan’s Place – Katie’s Corner

THE KATHERINE BOLKA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR ACADEMIC AND VISUAL ARTS EXCELLENCE AT URSULINE ACADEMY: This endowment was created to ensure that other young women who share Katie’s zest and quest for life, academic prowess, and artistic talents are allowed to realize their potential. Our dreams and visions are the prophets of our future. Dream often, live you life with verve, open your mind to the possibilities and visualize success, happiness, and fulfillment and you will honor Katie’s memory. Ursuline Academy was founded in Dallas in 1874 as an independent Catholic college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Ursuline sisters. The mission of Ursuline Academy is the total development of the individual student through spiritual formation, intellectual growth, service to others and building of community. Since the early 1980’s, hundreds of young women have benefited from the generous support of those who have given endowed scholarships to Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Each year, thanks to these donors, the Academy is able to increase financial assistance and merit scholarship awards for deserving students.
